150 stranded persons rescued on Srinagar-Leh NH
11/20/2006 11:43:05 PM

Srinagar, Nov 20
Nearly 150 persons stranded on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway due to snowfall and landslides have been rescued and taken to safer places in Sonamarg and Drass in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said here today.

At least 19 vehicles, including two of police, were stranded on either side of the dangerous Zojilla Pass, nearly 110 km from here.

Those on the Kargil side were brought down to Gumri camp from where they were shifted to government high school in Drass while those on Sonamarg side were taken to a camp in Balatal, officials said.

Efforts were on to remove vehicles from the highway, for which a police party has been deputed.

The Srinagar-Leh National Highway, closed on November 15 due to snowfall, avalanches and landslides in winter months, will officially reopen in May next year.
