Various political parties protest hike in petrol prices | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 17: Like other parts of the country, the issue of steep hike in fuel prices has also rocked the winter capital of the state, where various political parties today staged protest demonstrations against United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government for adopting anti-people policies. Lambasting the union government as well as state government for frequent rise in fuel prices besides increase in the prices of essential commodities, the Youth wing of Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) held a protest demonstration at Bikram Chowk. More than hundred PDP Youth activists assembled at Bikram Chowk to lodge a protest against continuing price hike of petrol. Carrying placards and posters, the PDP workers shouted slogans against central and state governments for keeping an ‘indifferent’ attitude towards common man. PDP leader Vikram Singh said that both central and state governments are responsible for hike in the price of petrol and other commodities. He demanded that the State reduce the tax on petrol to offset such hikes. The hike was 'anti-people' and would lead to a rise in prices of essential commodities. Strong protests were needed to force the government to withdraw from moves to hike the prices of petrol, he added “In the last seven years of the Congress- led UPA government, it has increased petrol prices 20 times, including 10 times last year alone,” Singh alleged and demanded a rollback. In another protest, Bhartiya Chaitanya Party (BCP) lashed at the Union Government for its failure to keep the price level of petroleum products and essential commodities. In a unique way of protesting the steepest hike ever of petrol, the BCP activists rode on ‘Tongas’ and bicycles. Shouting slogans against the government, the BCP activists said enough is enough, tolerance has crossed all levels. The present day central government has virtually broken the backbone of common people by increasing the price of petrol and increase in the prices of other petroleum products. BCP demanded that the prices should be brought back to the price slab of year 2010 by removing all the excise duty levied from time to time on these petroleum products and deficit if any or if necessary should be made good by increasing excise duty on country made liquor and foreign made whisky and alcoholic products.
