Can Geelani seek help from International Community? | After Osama’s funeral prayers | | Early Times Report
Jammu, May 18: The European Union team’s refusal to meet Hurriyat (G) chairman, Syed Ali Geelani and High Court Bar Association president, Mian Abdul Qayoom has shocked people close to the duo. The visiting team refused to meet the leaders for offering funeral prayers in absentia to slain Al Qaeda chief, Osama bin Laden.
Surprisingly both the leaders have been urging the international community to intervene in Kashmir. Both accuse New Delhi of treating Kashmir as a `colony’. According to newspaper reports, the team had sought time from Geelani. But at the last moment it was cancelled following intervention of the US embassy in New Delhi. The Embassy reportedly informed the team about Geelani’s participation in Osama’s funeral prayers.
The team while talking to newsmen said the meeting had been cancelled because Geelani and the Bar Association office bearers had held prayers for Osama.
A shocked admirer said the leaders should have refrained from annoying the International Community at `a crucial juncture’. “There was no need of offering funeral prayers for Osama”, he said.
Geelani described Osama a martyr and severely criticized US for burying him at sea. Later he urged the people to offer funeral prayers for Osama. Geelani’s appeal evoked a comment from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. In one of his tweets, Omar said Geelani had failed to feel the pulse of the people of Kashmir. “The people ignored his appeal”, he said.
The government did not place Geelani under house arrest to foil his programme. He was allowed to proceed to Batmaloo where he had plans to address a Friday congregation before leading Osama’s funeral prayers. A few hundred people participated in the prayers.
It is in place to mention here that nobody in Kashmir owned Osama during his lifetime. The funeral prayers, people by and large, believe were totally uncalled for. Geelani has been condemning the 9/11 attacks. A question arises. How can he seek help from people who are engaged in a war with Al Qaeda?
