Who are social & peace activists and what do they stand for? | Jammu & Kashmir | | STARK REALITY RUSTAM EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 17: A number of so-called social and peace activists were there in Kashmir yesterday. Some of them were Swami Agnivesh; journalist and Member of Parliament Shahid Sidique; NC leader and minister Qamar Ali Akhoon; Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, chairman, Jammu and Kashmir Peace Foundation; Ramesh Yadav; Sheikh Abdul Rehman; Brij Bhushan Tiwari; Abdul Ahad Wahid, Didi Sudershana, Father Khanna; and several others. Fayaz Ahmad Bhat arranged their meeting, called “Peace Conference.” The New Delhi-appointed interlocutors were also there in full strength in the so-called peace conference. Governor N N Vohra gave the opening remarks. Since Jammu and Ladakh are against what the so-called social and peace activists call peace, they were rigorously excluded from the peace conference. And, if at all there were some social and peace activists there in the peace conference hailing from Jammu and Ladakh, they, except Sheikh Abdul Rehman, were not even recognized. Reports, which emanated from Kashmir yesterday, nowhere suggested the participation of Jammu and Ladakh in the so-called peace conference and why should the “genuine social and peace activists” invite the hostile Jammu and Ladakh? After all, Jammu and Ladakh are no more than a stumbling block. It was indeed a one-sided show and it must cause worry. All the more because the State Governor made the opening remarks and the interlocutors participated in what could be legitimately termed as an exercise undertaken to queer the Indian pitch in Jammu and Kashmir and prepare ground for a lop-sided and communal solution. What did the so-called prominent social and peace activist Agnivesh said in the conference? He, among other things, said: “Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) should be revoked from the state to bring normalcy in the state. If someone has opposed about its revocation, those people have not understood the ground realities in Kashmir…Amarnath yatra should not be politicised and it should be restricted to specific period of time. Those who are making it an issue are actually trying to do it for their political gains.” He also told media persons on the sidelines of the so-called peace conference: “people sitting in New Delhi are actually running the show in Jammu and Kashmir and the state government has ‘no say’ in any matter. New Delhi is ‘beating about the bush’ on Kashmir…There are people sitting in New Delhi who are running the state’s affairs directly. It is a namesake government here (JK). It doesn’t have any say…Delhi people have made Kashmir there fiefdom and are using it for their own vested interests. Political leadership at New Delhi made countless promises to Kashmiris during past 60 years. They arranged conferences, appointed interlocutors at highest level. (But) None of the promises was kept. They (GOI) should be held responsible for breaking their promises.” What did Shahid Sidique says? He said: “If the central and state government have to win hearts and minds of the people of the state (read Kashmiri Muslims), then aspirations of the people should be addressed. The rights of the common people have been snatched and it is high time to restore them and win their hearts”… His message was loud and clear. What did National Conference senior leader Qamar Ali Akhoon said? He said: “Kashmir is a political issue and it needs to be resolved politically.” What did one of the interlocutors say: He reportedly said: “Participation of people in Panchayat polls and Kashmir problem were two different issues. Polls and Kashmir issue are far away from each other. People are participating in elections to address their basic issues…There is no doubt that by participating in the polls people have reiterated their faith in democracy.” What he said was what the NC and the PDP leadership had been saying since long. In other words, the so-called peace conference saw the NC-PDP leadership and the interlocutors on the same page. What did The Arab League ambassador to India Ahmed Salem al-Wahishi say? He drew a similarity between what he called Kashmir and Palestine-Israel conflict and said: “Kashmir issue is not on specific agenda of Arab league, but still Arab League is supporting peace initiatives taken by New Delhi about its solution. Jammu and Kashmir had passed through difficult stage for the last two decades and practical realities should not be forgotten and issues should be resolved peacefully and through co-coordinated efforts.” And, what was the bottom line of the so-called peace conference? Obviously, secession. It is hardly necessary to further reflect on the outcome of the “peace conference.” For, every word the participants uttered there in the conference was self-explanatory. The fact of the matter is that those who call themselves social and peace activists are actually mercenaries and agents of Pakistan and Kashmiri separatists. Jammu and Kashmir is in deep trouble. What the question is: What is it that the Jammu and Ladakh leadership is doing to controvert the pernicious influence of these “social and peace activists”? It must rise to the occasion and defeat these rabidly anti-India “social and peace activists.”
