Early Times Report

Srinagar, May 18: Senior IAS officer and Principal Secretary Agriculture Production Mohammad Iqbal Khanday's only son, 27-year-old Saajid Iqbal, died in a road accident when he was driving back to Srinagar from Anantnag at around 1.00 a.m last night.

SP Awantipore, Mohammad Irshad, told Early Times that Sajid's Alto JK02 A-8244 appeared to have swerved to extreme end of the highway and crashed against a poplar tree, killing him on spot. He seemed to be traveling alone in the silver colour Alto. His dead body was now at Police Station Pampore.

DIG South Kadhmir Shafqat Watali, who is husband of Khanday's sister-in-law, was among the first who reached Pampore early this morning. Arrangements were immediately made to send a state helicopter to get Khanday from Chandigarh. He was reportedly in the Punjab capital to pursue a case CBI has chargesheeted against him in 2006.

Sources said that Sajid had lately joined an NGO after completing his degree in law in Pune and thereafter practising for about two years in Jammu. His only sister, Sehar Iqbal, had also worked with Agha Khan Foundation before joining Mufti Sayeed's Peoples Democratic Part and contesting her maiden Assembly elections, unsuccessfully, from the home constituency of Kokernag in November 2008.

Dogged by tragedies and controversies, one of the state's most competent bureaucrats Khanday is an extremely high profile IAS officer. He is married to former Public Service Commission Chairman Shamsuddin Ganai's daughter, Kaneez Fatima, who is currently a Principal District and Sessions Judge. Two of Ganai's daughters are married to Commissioner-Secretary Power Basharat Ahmed Dhar and DIG south Kashmir Shafqat Watali respectively. Ganai also happened to be senior IAS officer Khursheed Ahmed Ganai's uncle. Both Khanday and Khursheed have functioned as Principal Secretary to two Chief Minusters, namely Mufti Sayeed and Omar Abdullah, respectively. Khursheed, who was shifted on Aug 26 last year, has recently proceeded on a central deputation to join as a joint secretary in Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

Kashmir's Divisional Commissioner and a direct IAS recruit Dr Asgar Hassan Samoon is the husband of Khanday's sister. This family of over 50 highl ranking bureaucrats, judges, IAS and KAS officers, besides academics and Police officers, is arguably considered to be the most powerful irrespective of regimes in J&K. Four of the family, namely, Asgar Samoon, his brother brother Masood Samoon (currently member PSC), Basharat and Khursheed, have served as Kadhmir's Divisional Commissioner.
After Sajid, Khanday has just one daughter, Sehar Iqbal, who is married to former MD JK Tourism Development Corporation Abdul Aziz Wani's and retired Commissioner Secretary Roma Wani's son, Omar.
