| Army completes 4th round of trials of 155mm guns | | |
New Delhi, Nov 20 The Army has completed an unprecedented fourth round of trials for the upgraded 155MM guns, raising prospects of early induction of the much-needed .52 calibre weapon to give the land forces enhanced firepower and reach to strike targets deep inside enemy areas.
The trials were carried out in the arid snowy heights of Ladakh earlier this month, army officials said, with Swedish SWS Bofors and Israeli Soltam guns pitted against each other.
The third bidder South African Gun Major Denel, against whom CBI investigations are underway on allegations of payoffs in the deal to supply anti-material rifles to army, was barred from the trials.
"All the parameters we had laid down in our Qualitative Requirements have been met in this round of trials", army officials said.
Both the Bofors and Soltam had to showcase their capability in summer trials held in Pokhran in blistering June weather and winter trials now in Ladakh.
Before this, Bofors, Soltam and Denel guns had put up three round of trials since 2001, in which the Swedish company, which has been taken over by British defence major British Aerospace, outperformed the rivals.
