Early Times Report
Jammu, May 19Hurriyat (M) executive member, Moulana Abbas Ansari‘s membership remains suspended as the conglomerate fails to take a decision on the issue. Ansari was suspended last month when he interacted with New Delhi’s nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir at his residence. A show cause notice was served on Ansari who responded by filing a detailed reply to it.
The separatist amalgam is in a fix. According to insiders it can afford Ansari’s expulsion at the cost of its `moderate tag’. “And if Abbas is retained, the amalgam may break. The best option therefore is to sleep over the matter. As they say people have a weak memory, they will forget it as the times passes.”
Ansari got appreciation from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for showing `exemplary courage’. London based Jammu Kashmir Council for Human Rights chairman, Dr Nazir Geelani wrote a 1300 word article in support of Ansari. However, the executive members of the amalgam severely opposed and criticized Ansari for talking to the interlocutors. The people, by and large, also resented the move.
The Hurriyat may defer a decision for the time being to set its house in order. The amalgam was pushed to the wall when the Home Minister, P Chidambaram offered secret talks to the separatists. A senior leader, Fazal Haque Qureshi was shot at. The bullet crippled the veteran leader for life. Soon after, the members revolted and sought reconstitution of the executive council. However, the amalgam survived the storm by promising changes in the set up.
Last month a local news agency interviewed one of the interlocutors (MM Ansari) at New Delhi. Ansari disclosed that a senior leader from Hurriyat (M) had met them. He also disclosed that he had received a representation from Mirwaiz Umer Farooq during their Rajouri tour.
Mirwaiz responded next day by saying that nobody had met the interlocutors in official capacity. Mirwaiz did not deny Ansari’s claim. The interview caused embarrassment to the conglomerate.
The amalgam has to take some harsh decisions to tame the general public but at the same time it does not want to lose its `moderate tag’. Terminating the membership of an executive member for participating in the dialogue process will send wrong signals to different quarters. The amalgam, it may be mentioned, has never opposed dialogue.
