EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 18: The so-called Swami Aghnivesh, who has been masquerading as social and peace activist and secularist of secularists for quite sometime now, is fooling India. It is not a secret. It is, however, a different matter that the powers-that-be in New Delhi have always given legitimacy to the kind of dirty politics he has been practicing to not only mint easy money but also to promote separatism and worst form of communalism. He is always seen in the company of the dreaded Maoists, Kashmiri separatists and similar other elements who have been working overtime to break India. What Agnivesh did and said in Kashmir on Monday and Tuesday should leave none in any doubt that he is more dangerous than the Maoists and Kashmiri separatists and that his single-point agenda is to outrage the sentiments of the Hindus and defend anti-India forces. The Jammu-based social and religious organizations did well yesterday by taking on Agnivesh and denouncing what he said about the Shri Amarnath Yatra. This is one side of the story. The other part of the story is no different and it deals with the meeting between him and Syed Ali Shah Geelani, which took place yesterday at the latter’s Hyderpora residence, Srinagar.
During the meeting, Geelani, among other things, told Agnivesh: “Minorities are an inseparable part of the Kashmiri society…Sikhs, Hindus and Christians in Kashmir faced no threat from their Muslim brethren.
We will continue to maintain our centuries old tradition of communal harmony and brotherhood…Our non-Muslim brothers should also feel the pain of their Muslim brothers and raise their voice against the oppression being committed against the Muslims, in whatever capacity they can.”
How could he describe Kashmir as epitome of communal harmony? It is not. It has consistently harassed, humiliated, insulted and tortured the minorities and rigorously excluded them from their original habitat. What is the number of Kashmiri Hindus still residing in the Valley? The number, according to the official statement made by the Revenue Minister on the floor of the Assembly only recently, is less than 4,000. What was the number of Kashmiri Hindus residing in the Valley before January 1990? Their number was more than three lakh.
Why did they quit Kashmir? They quit Kashmir in order to save their religion and culture, to save their honour and dignity and to escape their physical liquidation at the hands of Islamic radicals. Now these Kashmiri Hindus, who are languishing in one/two room tenements in Jammu and elsewhere in the country, are moving heaven and earth in order to have a separate homeland in the Valley so that they could go back to their original habitat and lead their a dignified and protected life under the Indian Constitution.
What was the number of Sikh who resided in the Valley before 1990? Their number was quite substantial. It was approximately 60,000. What is the number of Sikhs still staying put in the Valley? Not more than 30,000 and they are demanding minority status and seeking protection. Why did they leave Kashmir and became refugees in their own motherland? They left the Valley and they continue to flee from Kashmir even today because of the reasons that had forced the Kashmiri Hindus to quit their land of Vitasta (Jhelum) and become refugees in their own motherland.
And, remember, the process of migration of Kashmiri Hindus from the Valley to the safer zones in India had started with the rise of Muslim rule there in medieval period/centuries ago. The only period when the Kashmiri Hindus and other minorities could live peacefully in Kashmir was between 1819 and 1947 – the Sikh and Dogra rule. During this period, the Kashmiri Hindus did not migrate because the institution of the state gave them full protection and kept the communal forces in Kashmir under control. The process of migration restarted in October 1947, when New Delhi transferred political power from Jammu to Sheikh Abdullah and that process has been completed.
It’s no wonder that Kashmir which used to be 100 per cent Hindu before the 12th century has today become almost 100 per cent Muslim. The number of non-Muslims in Kashmir is not more than 30,000 to 35,000 in any case. What a remarkable example communal harmony! All this has happened because the authorities in New Delhi, like the likes of Agnivesh, have allowed the likes of Geelani to do what they want to do. The fact of the matter is that Geelani, Agnivesh and certain powerful elements in New Delhi are at the same page and the result is what it is.
