Growing Sino-Pak nexus threat to India
5/19/2011 11:22:30 PM
Following growing conflict between Washington and Islamabad after the elimination of the Al Qaeda Chief,Osama bin Laden, the establishment in Pakistan has shown greater dependence on Beijing. And Pakistan Prime Minister,Yusuf Raza,Geelani has given proof of Islamabad's proximity to Beijing when he said the other day that "China is Pakistan's best and most trusted friend."And China has reciprocated by assuring "unswerving support" to Pakistan. Brushing aside criticism against Pakistan following the killing of Osama bin Laden, China has said it “unswervingly” backed Islamabad’s counter-terrorism efforts and asked US to strengthen anti-terror cooperation with its ally by providing more aid.
“Pakistan has made very important contribution to international counter-terrorism cooperation as well as great sacrifices,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Jiang Yu said, as Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, began a key visit to the country, declaring China as his country’s best friend. Dismissing criticism against Pakistan in the aftermath of the killing of bin Laden, Jiang said, “China will unswervingly continue to support Pakistan’s efforts to counter terrorism. We believe that fending off and countering threat of terrorism is common challenge facing international community.”.
No doubt China-Pakistan alliance has been cemented since late 70's it has assumed new dimensions during the last one decade with Beijing adopting anti-India postures simply to extract more concessions from Pakistan by way of establishing its military bases. Washington has been providing Pakistan heavy military and economic aid but China equally has been responsible for helping Pakistan in modernizing its missile technology and by way of giving its Army tanks and fighter planes. Experts are of the opinion that if Islamabad has been adopting belligerent postures towards India it has been the result of continued backing by Beijing. And the current visit of Geelani to Beijing is viewed with concern in India because New Delhi believes that the two sides may hammer out new agreements under which Pakistan may get additional quota of military hardware. Already the sino-Pak activities on the other side of border in Ladakh and Kupwara-Keran-Karnah belts have called for further strengthening of the defence structure on this side of the border.Over the years both Islamabad and Biejing have been unreliable as far as India's security environment is concerned.
While Islamabad is aiding militants operating in Jammu and and Kashmir Beijing is assisting, funding and guiding Maoists and Naxals who have intensified their activities in nearly seven states in India.China has announced that it will support Islamabad in its fight against terrorism and this announcement seems not only untenable but amazing too as the two countries have been in the forefront of those forces that have been aiding terrorists and terrorism against India. The top Army functionaries in Islamabad are not prepared to handover intelligence agencies and the country's foreign policy with regard to India,US and Afghanistan to the civilian Government. It indicates that the Army in Pakistan wants to tighten its grip on the ISI and other intelligence agencies along with its say in the foreign policy. Here the role of Washington is to be viewed with interest in India because open and secret nexus between Islamabad and Beijing could prove dangerous for India which is playing a key part in the global fight against terrorism. It would be equally better for the establishment in Islamabad in general and the Pakistani Army in particular to learn a lesson or two from the latest sermon of former Prime Minister,Nawaz Sharif, who has said that the control of the intelligence agencies must be in the hands of the elected Government. He has advised Islamabad to stop treating India as its biggest enemy and carry out reappraisal of ties with its neighbor if "we want to go forward and progress."Hope Islamabad heeds this suggestion.
