Commoners are often bruised, insulted by "overbearing" medicos
5/20/2011 12:14:33 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 19: The alleged May 14 happening of Dr Avinash Soodan beating up Nazir Ahmad, whose daughter was admitted to ward No 15 of GMC hospital for snake bite treatment, is the latest in the long list
of incidents of the "overbearing" medicos insulting, pushing, or even bruising commoners and treating them like animals.
Nazir was allegedly kicked in the stomach and on other body parts by Dr Avinash after he repeatedly asked him to examine his daughter whose
condition was said to have deteriorated. The doctor, who obviously got irritated by Nazir's repeated calls, allegedly maltreated him.Outside the hospital also, commoners and less qualified people are maltreated by them.
Dr Avinash is a PG student. Two months ago, another PG doctor Sunny Singh, son of Kuldeep Singh of Rattiyan, had in full public view thrashed and insulted bar waiters under the influence of liquor at
Nehru Market here.
Though the waiters had let him go, he had lodged a report against them
with the Nehru Market police post even as he himself was an accused.
A retired orthopaedician, who now runs a nursing home at Trikuta
Nagar, was in the habit of insulting patients and attendants at the
GMC hospital. He even pushed attendants out of wards and slapped
patients. Complaints were also lodged against him with the hospital
administration several times by some people.
A lady doctor had slapped a pregnant poor woman at SMGS hospital some
time back because she was not able to understand what she said. While
the doctor spoke in Hindi and English, the poor woman spoke in pahari
Dogri. This became the reason for her insult at the hands of the
"qualified" doctor.
Another lady doctor, who runs a clinic from her residence at New
Rehari, too had gained notoriety for maltreating poor women coming
from rural areas.
Not only this, a notorious RMO of Raghunath Pura, had a brigade of
city's top criminals during his posting at GMC hospital. He could slap
and harass anybody with impunity from law.
A pregnant Vaishnodevi pilgrim was few years back raped by a doctor at
SMGS hospital where she had gone for her medical check up.A famed
child specialist had refused to treat a newborn male baby, telling his
parents that they could take him home as for him he was
dead. The child was later taken by the parents to a private nursing
home at Gandhinagar where the doctor concerned had given him the
requisite treatment and saved him.
There are several such incidents in which doctors have maltreated
patients and their attendants at government hospitals.A five-member
board was constituted to probe into the allegations against Dr
Avinash. As all the board members are doctors, it was
suspected that they could make efforts to exonerate Dr
Avinash. However, going by their proven track record, it was expected
from them that their report would not be influenced by any sort of
pressure. They were expected to recommend action against the guilty.
