An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast had rocked one of the three vehicles of the patrolling convoy of CRPF late Tuesday evening on National Highway 221, six kilometers away from Sukma town in Dantewada district, some 500 km south of state capital Raipur. It was a powerful blast that ripped through a Tavera vehicle carrying paramilitary personnel. Five men of the CRPF's second battalion were killed on the spot and two died a few hours later. One of them got injured in the powerful blast. “The coffins carrying bodies of five CPRF jawans including four belonging to Jammu province and one from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh, reached here at Jammu airport,” Vinay Kumar Anand, CRPF official spokesman told reporters. He said the jawans were killed on late Tuseday evening when their vehicle, which was on way from Kerlapal to Sukma was blown by an IED fitted on the road by the naxalities. “There were eight jawans travelling in the ill fated vehicle out of which seven were killed and one was injured," the spokesman said. The vehicle was tossed several feet up in the air by the powerful blast. The Maoists fled away into the nearby forests after hitting the convoy. The deceased jawanss have been identified as Surinder Singh, resident of Sondar, Basohli, district Kathua, Abdul Qayum, son of Syed Mohammad, resident of Shahdara Haveli, district Poonch, Rashpal Singh, son of Thakur Dass, resident of Nagrota, district Jammu, Sanjay Kumar, resident of Delriyan, Mirpur Sidhar, Akhnoor, district Jammu and Sanjeev Singh Pathania, Noorpur, district Kangra, Himachal Pradesh while one of the injured Narinder Gandhi, also belonged to Jammu. The mood at Jammu airport was sombre as the family members of the martyred jawans also reached there to receive the bodies. Senior officials from police, CRPF and civil administration also reached the airport and paid their tributes to the martyrs by laying wreaths. Later, the bodies of the martyred CRPF personnel were shifted to their native places for the last rites. It is pertinent to mention here that last year also there were some major attacks on men in uniform in the region by the Maoists. On May 17 of 2010, a landmine blast had killed more than 40 people, including civilians and Special Police Officials (SPOs). The attack had occurred just a month after Dantewada witnessed the killing of 76 CRPF men in April that year.
