People expect CM to clean `face of JK’
Welcome to the ugly city!

Early Times Report
Jammu, May 19: Even as the Chief Minister believes Srinagar was the
face of Jammu Kashmir, the summer capital has won the distinction of
being the ugliest city in the state. Most of the tourists who do not
boast of coming from clean or `healthier’ cities of India could be
seen wearing surgical masks. “It stinks. I wear the mask to escape
infection”, said Rampal who is in `one time paradise on earth’ on a
holiday.
Last year Srinagar was declared the third dirtiest city. The
concerned vehemently contested the rating. But when a municipality
has just 600 sweepers against a required strength of 3800, the plight
of the city can only be imagined. But the municipality alone cannot be
held responsible for the mess this historic city finds itself in
today.
“It goes without saying that Srinagar is one of the most neglected
cities and political considerations seem to have played a big role
towards this neglect. The successive Governments have ignored its
development needs. Even when it comes to giving the city a face-lift,
repairing a road, constructing a drain or laying macadam, Srinagar is
given step motherly treatment. See the condition of Nallahmar road, it
looks like the road of medieval times”, said M.S Shah of Rainawari.
Shah further said: “The condition of Residency road or M.A. Road is no
better. The footpath of M.A. Road was recently repaired and tiles
laid over it but no body has bothered to remove the left-over debris.
Dividers have been placed on Residency Road and in Jahangir Chowk to
regulate traffic but see how much dirt has accumulated in between
them.”
The greatest shock came from a resident of Muzaffarabad who arrived
recently in the Carvaan-e-Aman. Expressing surprise over the condition
of roads and drains of Srinagar, he said: “We have better roads and
drains in Muzaffarabad.” People in Srinagar believe that Muzaffarabad
was a backward area that craves for development
