SKUAST scientists called upon to promote research activit ies | | | Early Times Report Jammu,May 20:- Emphasis was laid on promotion of research and extension activities for the benefit of the faming community at the 12th Research Council Meeting which was held at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Jammu, today. The two-day-long meeting is held under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor, Dr. B. Mishra.During his opening remarks Dr. B. Mishra, stressed upon the scientific community of the University to give top priority to research in order to tackle the problems being faced by the farming community. He highlighted that the applied research should target for more profitability to the farming community through better varieties and introduction of hybrids and fast dissemination of University’s technologies in Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Mushroom, Bee-keeping, Value addition, Post Harvest Technology etc. and to prepare action plan to meet the challenges posed by climate change and global warming. Dr. Bir Pal Singh, Director Central Patato Research Institute, Simla was the expert of eminence in the field of agricultural sciences and Dr. P.L. Koul was the expert of eminence in the field of veterinary sciences for the meeting. He suggested that data should be generated on the needs of state and particularly Jammu region so that research programmes are formulated accordingly to raise the economic status of the farmers. Dr. S.S. Jamwal, Jt. Director, Agriculture, Jammu stressed on the need for making available new varieties particularly in oilseeds and pulses, development of viable cropping systems for dryland agriculture and model watershed. Dr. S.L. Tickoo, Jt. Director, Animal Husbandry stressed on the need for more interaction between University and the Line Department for devising farmer friendly research programmes. Earlier, Director Research, Dr. R.M. Bhagat in his welcome address gave an account of the various research activities carried in the University. He impressed upon scientists to evolve new high yielding varieties to increase productivity. The meeting was attended by Heads of the Development Departments of the GoJK, Directors and Deans, Heads of the Divisions, Stations and Regional Stations of the University besides other stake-holders. Dr. Deepak Kher, Associate Director Research conducted the proceedings of the meeting.(eom)
