Tourism boom in valley | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 20 :-Despite advisory having been issued by the Governments in a number of countries, including the UK and the USA, a large number of foreigners have started thronging the scenic Kashmir valley. Official sources said that the since 2002 the successive at governments have been pleading Washington, London and other countries for withdrawing advisories issued against visiting Kashmir no major change has been witnessed during the last nine years. They said that if a large number of foreigners were seen holidaying in the Kashmir valley they have travelled on their own. The sources said that intelligence agencies have been told to remain on the alert during the tourist season. Hoteliers and houseboat owners in Srinagar said that their rooms are reserved for next two months. They said, “ We expect some lean period between July and August but from September onwards the valley is expected to witness heavy tourist traffic." Number of hoteliers were sure that the ensuing Amarnath pilgrimage may help them in earning some revenue because groups of pilgrims evince interest in staying in the valley after performing the yatra. Ghulam Mohammad, secretary Houseboat owners Association, has suggested to the state Government to send a team of senior officers to Delhi Kolkatta, Mumbai and other states for removing an impression among people that travelling to Kashmir is not safe. He and all those connected with the tourism industry said that it was a matter of great satisfaction and relief that after three years touring are again visiting valley in large numbers. They admitted that last year it was a bumper tourism season in the valley but it was cut short when the civilian strife surfaced in Kashmir. They said that the five-month long summer unrest last year had wrecked the tourist season. Both hoteliers, traders and houseboat owners have appealed to people, especially the youth in Kashmir, to maintain peace which was needed for a bumper tourist traffic to Kashmir. They said, “No doubt heavy tourist traffic has brought smiles on the faces of hoteliers and traders but we keep our fingers crossed because we are not sure which way the wind will blow."
