On Rajiv Gandhi’s death anniversary, Congress hosts dinner | Conspiracy Against Soz ? | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 20: Believe it or nor, but it is a fact. The JKPCC is hosting a dinner on former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s death anniversary at Afsar Palace, Shaki Nagar, Jammu, on Saturday. In fact, one of JKPCC general secretaries has sent a signed invitation letter, dated May 17 to several senior Congressmen. The letter reads: “Dear friend, It is to inform you that J&K Pradesh Congress Committee is organizing a function to commemorate the death anniversary of Late Shri Rajiv Gandhi Ji, former Prime Minister, on 21st of May, in the lawns of Government Guest House, Canal Road, Jammu, at 11:00 a.m. Shri Mohan Prakash Ji – member CWC and in-charge J&K party affairs will be chief guest. Prof. Saif-ud-Din Soz, (former Union Minister) President JKPCC shall preside over the function. You are requested to participate in the function, along with party colleagues. You are also requested to have dinner with Chief Guest at AFSAR PALACE near A.G. office Shakti Nagar, Jammu. With regards, General Secretary.” May 21st is a solemn occasion. It was on this day in 1999 that independent India’s 9th Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by Thenmuli Rajaratnam alias Dhanu, a suicide bomber of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) at Siriperumbudur near Chennai, Tamil Nadu, by a conspiracy hatched by Velupillai Prabhakaran and his intelligence Chief Pottu Amman. It is an occasion for the Indian nation to remember the former Prime Minister and the splendid contribution that he made to India, as also to urge the Indian nation to fight out terrorism, separatism and communalism as well as those demanding autonomy and self-rule for Jammu and Kashmir in the name religion. To be more precise, May 21st is not an occasion for celebrations. It appears there are elements in the JKPCC who are conspiring against JKPCC chief Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz in order to weaken his position. It’s no wonder then that the letter of invitation has created confusion among the invitees, with some of them saying on the condition of anonymity that there are elements in the JKPCC who have vitiated the solemn occasion by thinking in terms of hosting a dinner on the death anniversary of Rajiv Gandhi. Some of them have asked: Was it a faux-pass or was it something deliberate?
