Tenth phase of Panchayat polls in J&K | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, May 21 : Polling for the tenth phase of the 16th-phased Panchayat elections has begun in eleven blocks of Jammu and Kashmir, where people have to elect panches and sarpanches.
Despite boycott call by separatists, including breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC), more than 80 per cent polling was recorded in the first nine phases of polling in the state, which began on April 13.
However, a woman candidate, belonging to People's Democratic Party (PDP) was killed while two other candidates were shot at and injured and two panchayat ghars were set on fire.
Polling began at 0800 hrs amid unprecedented security arrangements.
People, including women, were seen marching towards their respective polling stations much before the polling started.
Hundreds of state police and CRPF personnel, wearing bullet proof jackets and holding automatic weapons were seen deployed outside the polling station to instill confidence among the voters and also thwart any attempt to disrupt the process.
In Valley, five blocks going to polls included Teetwal in frontier Kupwara district, Pattan in Baramulla, Hajin in Bandipora, Keller in Pulwama and Dachnipora in Anantnag.
In Jammu region, Inderwal block of district Kishtwar, Assar and Thathri in Doda, Banihal in Ramban ,Khour in Jammu and Balakote in Poonch district undergoing polls today.
