| Terror outfits recruit children | | |
Jammu, Nov 21 Children in Jammu and Kashmir have been some of the worst victims of militancy in the valley but now they are being exploited further. Many terrorist organisations, active in the state, have started recruiting children. student of class X at the Government High School in Doda, Bashir was asked by Irshad, an LeT militant junior to him in school, to throw a grenade at a mosque during the month of Ramzan. Bashir found the mosque heavily guarded and didn't carry out the attack. "He called me from my home and said that we will kill you if you don't come with us. They gave me a grenade and asked me to throw it at a local politician Khalid Sahib. I kept the grenade with me for 10 days but I could not do the job, I returned the grenade," said Bashir Ahmed. Similar cases His isn't the only case, in nearby Kishtawar, Afzal a class X student is back with his family after being rescued from Harkat-ul-Jehad Islami militants in Doda district. The 17-year-old had been picked up in October for arms training. "I had gone home for Eid, on the way militants picked me up and took me with them. They were in a house when Army and police cordoned it, the militants managed to flee, I ran to the Army for safety," said Mohammed Afzal. In Doda district alone in the last 10 months, 15 teenagers have either been rescued from militants or have escaped themselves.
Persuaded for money
Police say children are being increasingly enlisted as they aren't normally suspected and can be persuaded to participate in terrorist attacks for a few thousands rupees.
"Children can be easily motivated, a child who had not had Rs 10 from his parents gets Rs 5000-10,000, he is lured to it," said S P Vaid, IG, Jammu.
Militants are enlisting new faces to carry out terror attacks in the state this could be because they are facing a shortage of the cadre now.
But whatever be the case, clearly the latest trend presents a greater challenge before the security forces.
