Congress dissidents need a dose of discipline | | | Jammu, May 21 :-When compared to the National Conference the state unit of the Congress is likely to suffer more as far as the ant incumbency factor is concerned. This is so because of the continued factional feud that has plagued the congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Invariably a party in power is likely to expand its areas of influence and the Congress, which has been sharing power since 2002,first with the PDP and now with the National Conference, should have by now grown in size and stature but it has frittered away the chances for its growth mainly on account of the conflict between the loyalists, headed by Saif-ud-Din Soz,PCC Chief, and the dissidents, led by Ghulam Nabi Azad. The National Conference is also gripped by groupism but its leaders and workers have not been seen fighting against one another in the streets as is the case with the congress. During the last over 15 months the dissidents have been seen functioning as if they belong to a separate organisation. Whatever good work has been done by Soz for keeping the parrty up and kicking, despite many disadvantages, is being undone by the activities of the dissidents. What is intriguing and amazing is the way the Congress high command has been watching the growing differences between the loyalists and the dissidents like spectators sitting in the galleries. And the Congress has been left with no option but to function as a second fiddle to the National Conference as far as the question of revocation of order on issuance of Dogra certificate and on the curtailment of the Amarnath yatra duration is concerned. Both these issues have started contributing to rapid erosion in the strength of the Congress, especially in its stronghold of the region of Jammu. The Congress would have not experienced emaciation had not the Azad led camp targetted the loyalists. In the growing conflict between the loyalists and the dissidents the National Conference has been a gainer. The differences between the two factions are not the result of any ideological dispute but the outcome of ego problem and Azad's desire to have absolute control on the organisation in Jammu and Kashmir. After his stint as chief Minister between 2005 and 2008 Azad seems to have developed interest in running the Government in his home state. He no longer seems to be interested in contesting the Lok Sabha election from some constituency in Maharashtra but from Jammu and Kashmir.Or at the most he wishes to get elected to the Rajya Sabha from Jammu and Kashmir as has been the case in 2008 His style of functioning has made him indispensable for the Congress high command and that has been the reason that Sonia Gandhi and others have not till date directed him to keep his hands off the congress in Jammu and Kashmir. Reports indicate that the ground under the Congress feet is slipping and if the rate of erosion was not checked by the party high command by taming the dissidents the Congress may face a tough time during the next Assembly election. Besides controlling the dissidents the Congress high command need not support the policy of playing a second fiddle to the National Conference because the party led by Farooq Abdullah has earned sufficient displeasure of the Jammuites on account of its Kashmir centric policies.(eom) |
