RAJOURI, May 21: Notwithstanding the tall claims of state and centre government for providing smooth Mid Day Meal (MDM), Food Corporation of India has reportedly blocked ration of education department for district Poonch for the last 5 months which has resulted in the cooking of no Mid Day meal in Poonch schools.
Sources said that FCI has blocked ration supply to education department Poonch since they have not made payments to FCI. Sources said that department is yet to clear Rs. 20 lakh pending for payment. They added that department had to pay Rs. 70 lakh, of which it has cleared an amount of Rs. 50 lakh.
Tussle between two government bodies over non-payments of ration has left a bad impact on the education system in Poonch where sources said that enrolments of students are decreasing from the schools due to non-cooking of official school lunch. Sources said that most affected areas include Sathra and Mandi zones of Poonch district where according to sources, students are leaving the schools.
"Most of the students have left the schools in our area because they could not get MDM for last five months", a teacher of Sathra said on the condition of anonymity. He added that students used to come school for lunch and the objective of this lunch also was to attract students to the school in order to implement education for all programme.
There are also similar complaints from Mandi area of the districts. Sources said that if the situation would remain same for some more time, maximum schools will give deserted look in near future. Chief Education Officer (CEO) Poonch Ashraf Chohan admitted that there are seven education zones where Mid Day Meal was not cooked for the last 5 months. He however said that it is being cooked in five zones.
About the reason of non-cooking, CEO said that they have to pay balance payment of Rs 20 lakh to FCI and till the department will not submit the amount to them, FCI will not supply ration. "FCI has stopped ration 5 months ago and as soon as we will not pay them the balance amount they might not supply the ration", he said adding that he is waiting funds to come so that it is given to FCI.
