Claiming Cong edge in Panchayat polls, Soz asks party to get ready for Local bodies elections
'Separatists must take cue from massive poll percentage, join talks'
5/22/2011 12:34:36 AM
Jammu, May 21: Even as ongoing panchayat polls are being held on non party basis, the J&K Congress chief Prof Saif-u-Din Soz today claimed success of the candidates backed by the party particularly in Kashmir valley which showed the ideology of the party was acceptable to the people across the state. He asked the party to get ready for the Local Bodies polls which will be held soon. Soz also said the separatists must take cue from the huge participation of the people in the state and come forward for talks.
?"Indeed the polls were held on non party basis ....we did not campaign for any candidate nor gave them any money or material support but we certainly offered them moral support", Soz said replying to the query of reporters on the sidelines of a function at Guest House here which was organised to pay tributes to former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on his 20th death anniversary. The PCC chief and former Union minister further said most of the candidates who have been elected as Panches and Sarpanches have leanings towards the Congress and therefore they are welcome into party fold any time. "It is democracy there are no hard and afst restrictions......Prof Soz said adding that the decision to hold the polls on non party basisi was largely to avoid threats from militants and some other related factors.
?Substantiating his point, Congress president claimed it has an edge in theseelections as vote percentage of candidates backed by it has increasedin comparison to the 2008 Assembly elections."Sarpanchs and Panchs elected with Congress ideology have shown edge to the Congress in Panchayati polls in Kashmir even as elections aregoing on........Congress has got much more than expected in panchayati polls in Kashmir", he added.
?There was increase in the vote bank of the Congress as compared to 2008 Assembly elections," the former Union Minister said. "Our candidate in Noorabad had polled only 11,500
votes in 2008 Assembly elections and lost to National Conference (NC) candidate who is now a Minister. Today he got 23,500 votes." Similarly, in Ganderbal Assembly segment we have gained in terms of votes, he said, adding that he wasn't expecting such an edge to the party in Ganderbal.
Expressing satisfaction over massive turnout of the voters, the Congress chief said 87 % poll percentage in the polls was a clear and loud message that people are yearning for return of peace and complete normalcy. He said separatists should join other parties in talks with New Delhi to find a solution that respects the aspirations of all three regions of the state - Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir.
'I have been arguing that the separatists should join their voice with that of the mainstream parties and then project a common voice in talks with Delhi,' Pradesh Congress Committee president Saif-ud-Din Soz said while speaking to pary workers earlier in the function..
He said the Congress would not accept any region specific solution. He said there should be simultaneous dialogue between India and Pakistan and the leaders of Jammu and Kashmir and the central government. 'That alone would deliver results.'
Soz, whose efforts yielded results in breaking the ice when the central government and separatists' dialogue got stalled in 2005, said the solution in the state should be such that it respects the aspirations of people in the state's Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir regions.
