| Faculty of Zoology taking Jammu University for a ride ? | | But who cares, at least not Vice Chancellor | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 22:
What is so special about the Department of Zoology, University of Jammu.? Do they spend less time in their classes and are relatively free or they possess additional qualification to occupy the high posts of administration in the university campus.By any standards it is the most powerful department of all the faculties in the university.
At least four senior faculty members of the department are occupying several crucial posts of administration and by default controlling the affairs of the university on daily basis.
The faculty members are considered the most 'powerful club' and labelled as 'eyes' and 'ears' of the vice chancellor for his over dependence on them for even routine matters.
At the same time the ongoing arrangement has left students of the department in disarray. They do not get to see the face of their faculty members for several days and cannot even attend their classes as large number of them are often occupied with the administrative work of the university and are left with very little time to spend with their in the class rooms.
To begin with Dr Kuldeep Krishan Sharma, having specialization in fisheries is looking after the charge of Director Quality Assurance and most of the time find it difficult to strike a balance with the time table of the department. He often ends up staying out of the classroom than teaching his students. Even after trying his level best, he ends up annoying his favourite students due to his preoccupation with the additional burden on his shoulders.
Then Prof NK Tripathi, a Cytogenetic Specialist, is also burdened with the responsibility of Dean Students Welfare, and having additional charge of Human Genetics and campus security. Under the prevailing circumstances he is the most important and busiest faculty member.
Insiders in the University say Vice Chancellor Prof Varun Sahni has given him all the responsibilities and he too enjoys clout in the university administration by virtue of his proximity to few other senior faculty members.
His level of indulgence is such that often he is seen wasting time over petty issues with those who trespass in the campus or do not have any other purpose except for wandering aimlessly. On Saturday Prof Tripathi manhandled few media persons while they were interacting with the students to take their feedback. He took cudgels with the media persons for no valid reason and used filthy language as well, unbecoming of a senior faculty member. When attention of the senior University functionary and even Vice Chancellor was drawn towards the episode they too took it lightly and instead of directing Prof Tripathi to mend his ways ignored the complaint. The same faculty member is on verge of retirement and eying post of the member Public Service Commission in lieu of his long service career.
The same Prof Tripathi, who entered in to a verbal brawl claimed to have banned entry of media persons on the campus, shamelessly allowed student leader Vikas Sharma to spit venom against the Vice Chancellor and do nothing about it on May 19. On the other hand he shamelessly defended his action of manhandling media persons who were discharging their duties without disturbing the peace on the campus.
Another faculty member Prof Deep Sahi is looking after the charge of campus development and beautification. Prof JS Tara, has been made Director Poonch campus.
Head of the department Prof Kadambari Gupta is not handling any other responsibility and is devoting quality time on the curriculum itself. When contacted several other senior faculty members opined that they simply fail to understand what is the reason behind handing over the charge of key positions to faculty of the Zoology department alone. There are several other seasoned faculty members equally capable and equipped to handle the assignments but none of them have been entrusted with the task and a coterie has been allowed to mushroom and multiply to watch their own vested interest. A senior faculty member said, "I am disillusioned with the working of the Jammu University and somehow get the feeling no one cares for the Jammu University and the betterment of the students".
