Militancy, civil strife destroyed plural ethos in Valley: Bhan | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, May 22 (KNS): Senior Congress leader and prominent Supreme Court lawyer, Advocate Ashok Bhan, Sunday said the militancy and civil strife has devastated the plural ethos and demographic profile in Kashmir. In a statement, Bhan said, “Exiled Pandits suffer continuously and average Kashmiris cynicism and disgust is the order of the day. The ruling dispensation has belied the expectation of good governance despite the fact that the Chief Minister was given a free hand to translate his youthful ideas into the reality.” Bhan who according to the statement was speaking at a seminar in New Delhi organized by an NGO “Peace Initiative State”, said, “The huge turnover and participation of people in the Panchayat polls is an expression of change of mood at the grass root level and the rejection of radicalization of social, political life in the valley. This expression needs to be valued and respected by the state and central government by empowering the panchayats without any political bias.” “The streets of Kashmir today are more partial to the peace and dialogue. State Congress is required to rise above petty coalition politics and evolve a policy of empathy, and heal the wounds of suffering people,” he urged. He also advocated state Congress to canvas for out of box solution to the Kashmir imbroglio ‘which can win the hearts and minds of the people.’ Bhan urged the Congress President Sonia Gandhi to refurbish the image of the Party in the state. “Leaders who have impeccable integrity, astuteness and commitment to lead the governance in the state after the expiry of the initial three years in January 2012 should be given a lead role.”
