SAYN and SASB face to face with each other | Amarnath Yatra | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 23: Shri Amarnath Yatri Niyas (SAYN) and Shri Amarnath Shrine Board (SASB) are on a warpath. The issue that has estranged the relations between the SAYN and the SASB is not that big and it can be resolved in no time provided the SASB is willing to view the demand of the former taking into consideration the sentiment involved. The issue is both emotional and religious and needs to be addressed as such. What has pitted the SAYN against the SASB or the vice-versa is the demand of the former that Yatra to the Holy Cave of Shri Amarnath be started on June 15 because it is an auspicious day and the refusal of the latter to accept it and, instead, stick to the decision that the Yatra would official commence 15 days later. The result of this otherwise avoidable confrontation between the two is that both are registering the names of those desirous of undertaking the Yatra. Not only this, the SAYN has made it loud and clear that any move on the part of the authorities, including those in the State Raj Bhawan, to stop the pilgrims from undertaking the pilgrimage on June 15 would lead to law and order problem in Jammu. In other words, the SAYN has threatened full-scale confrontation with the authorities and this doesn't augur well either for Jammu or for Kashmir, and even for those who have made all necessary arrangements to pay obeisance at the Holy Cave of Shri Amarnath. The confrontation would certainly cause inconvenience to all the concerned. But the SAYN is not the only organization of the devotees of Lord Shiva that has decided to fight out the SASB. There are umpteen other organizations, including student organizations, which have also warned the SASB to behave or face the consequences. The BJP, which has been struggling to come out of the shock caused by its own unscrupulous MLAs on April 13, too, has, upped its ante and held out a threat that "it would start agitation in case the SASB sticks to its decision", which, according to it, "is anti-Hindu" and which has been taken by the SASB in order to "pander to the Kashmir-based communalists and separatists." The situation as it exists today in Jammu does warrant a positive attitude from the authorities. Positive attitude on the part of the SASB is required all the more because the confrontation between the two has only created confusion among those wishing to undertake the Yatra. Why should all this happen when things can be sorted out? Things can be sorted out if the Shrine Board expresses its willingness to follow the tradition. Even otherwise, longer duration is in the interest of the people and the nation. For, it not only enables the people from different parts of India to interact with their Kashmiri brethren but also forges unity at social level. Besides, we are a secular democracy and it is the fundamental duty of the authorities to handle religious issues in a manner that doesn't lead any community to believe that the attitude of the former is hostile towards their faith. To be more precise, the SASB should follow the former Governor Lt Gen (retd) SK Sinha's model, which was rational, national, democratic and secular. |
