Moderate Mirwaiz talks tough at Kupwara rally | | | Early Times Report Jammu, May 23: `State repression world force youth the pick up guns yet again'. This is how `moderate' Mirwaiz reacted to imposition of `undeclared' curfew to foil Eidgah rally on May 21. The Mirwaiz had urged people to assemble at Eidgah grounds to commemorate the death anniversary of his father, Mirwaiz Moulana Farooq who was gunned down at his residence on May 21,1990. This is the first time when Mirwaiz has warned government of India of `armed response' incase `state repression' did not end. Sensing that his warning did not go well with his `moderate' image, the cleric sought a trilateral round tale conference between India, Pakistan an people of Jammu Kashmir. "We want to tell New Delhi and Islamabad that we want to be part of the dialogue process", he said while addressing a massive rally at Kralpora, Kupwara. The rally paid glowing tributes to the memory of slain Peoples' Conference chairman Abdul Gani Lone. Curiously the Mirwaiz has always talked about peace, demilitarization and dialogue. He has the distinction of being the first person to opt for a political platform at a time when situation in Kashmir was very hot. Umer Farooq founded the All Parties Hurriyat Conference in 1993. This was the tie when political space had been chocked by militants. Mirwaiz's warning has come barely a month after he lashed out at gunmen for killing Jamiat-e-Alihadees president, Mulana Showkat. He is one of the members of the investigating committee constituted to probe the murder. Umer also took a harsh decision last month by suspending the membership of his executive member, Abbas Ansari for meeting New Delhi's nominated interlocutors on Jammu Kashmir at his residence. A similar statement was issued by JKLF chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik last year. He also threatened `revival' of armed struggle if killing of innocent youth was not stopped. Malik also opted for peaceful means in 1994 after announcing unilateral cease-fire. Yasin is very close to Mirwaiz. They have been spotted together at various rallies last month. |
