CII to enhance engagement in Leh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 24: The Leh flash floods in August 2010 saw the beginning of CII’s engagement in this region of Jammu & Kashmir. This unprecedented disaster led to the Confederation of Indian Industry members mobilizing 20 tons of relief material worth over Rs 1.2 crore immediately, which was distributed in 21 locations, including 7 far flung villages which had no access by road. On the advice of the district administration, CII further undertook to rebuild all the washed away or irretrievably damaged houses in Saboo village, numbering a total of 13. Construction work was started in September and 2 completed houses handed over to the neediest beneficiaries on 30 October. Work on the remaining 11 houses has begun in April this year after the harsh winter and these are scheduled for completion by June. A unique feature of these houses are the use of compressed earth blocks, adding strength to the structure while also taking care of the fact that Leh falls in seismic zone IV. In addition to Saboo, CII distributed 1000 cement bags to 80 BPL families, whose houses were partially damaged for repairing their houses, in the presence of local administration. Enhancing its engagement in the region, CII, in the next phase, hopes to partner the government on the skills front. Preliminary discussions on the Skill Gap Study conducted by CII are planned for later this month with the concerned district authorities besides the Ladakh Hill Development Council. The CII Study has identified several trades in construction, manufacturing, travel & tourism, besides agriculture and services for which there is a dearth of skilled people. The purpose of the partnership is to understand better the local needs and tailor CII’s skills and other future programs accordingly. “The Leh project has been one of the most challenging tasks that the CII team faced – working in a completely unfamiliar terrain, in harsh weather conditions, with inaccessible road, working on construction – something that we were not very familiar with, but this has been a great learning experience for all of us and we look forward to expanding our work in Ladakh ”, said Raju Chowdhary, Chairman, CII J&K State Council. The state of Jammu & Kashmir will be a focus area for us, particularly in the skills space, Vijay Thadani, Chairman, CII Northern Region & CEO, NIIT Ltd has stressed. “While the district-wise skill gap study was the first step in this direction, the endeavour now is to correlate this and synchronise our efforts with those of the government in Ladakh,” he said.
