NC responsible for deteriorating situation: Mehbooba | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 24: Urging people of the state to look beyond the beaten political track, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti has called for a reassessment of the role of traditional parties who monopolized power politics for decades. “Parties like the National Conference established by grandfathers and dominated by sons and grandsons have outlived their utility and relevance and have been dumped by the people in states like West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and earlier in Bihar and UP,” she said. Mehbooba said that PDP is gaining acceptability only on the strength of its forward looking agenda of peace and resolution and performance during its brief stint in government when it set new standards of governance. On the other hand NC was getting squeezed out of political space and remained part of the power structure only by nurturing its lifelines at the cost of state’s dignity, political authority and economic assets, she added. Stressing that restoration of full and unfettered democracy was the way forward in Jammu and Kashmir, PDP chief said it is this spirit that keeps the country going in spite of the massive scams, abject poverty among a large section of poverty and other socio economic issues facing it. “People must have the final say in choosing their government, a right that unfortunately is granted to the people of this state only reluctantly and curtailed generally to bring in a ‘preferred party’” she said. Mehbooba said though NC was paying for its sins against the people it had refused to learn any lessons. It further muddled the political situation in the state by indulging in open horse trading for a mere council seat and even the chief minister celebrated the victory achieved through bribing of BJP legislators. She said on governance front it has failed to provide any new initiatives and instead reversed the development and political process launched with visible results by its preceding coalition. “PDP had led the state into a completely new and unfamiliar era of open political activity, equitable development and political empowerment that had benefited people of all the regions of the state”, she added. Even on the larger political resolution scenario PDP seeks a partnership of all the regions and communities as enshrined in it the party’s vision document. She said the party’s call for opening of traditional routes would benefit all regions and transform the state from a dead end to a vibrant trading destination as it historically has been. Referring to the development deficit in the state Mehbooba said the NC had restricted state’s growth potential by selling out its resources for personal power.
