Rather resolves to curb forest smuggling, check encroachment | | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 24: Minister for Finance Abdul Rahim Rather has reaffirmed governments’ firm resolve to curb forest smuggling and check encroachment of forest land effectively. Reacting to news report in a section of press under caption, “Finance Minister’s statement encourages Forest Land Mafia”, Rather in unequivocal terms said that there could be no compromise on protecting forests from jungle mafia adding that encroachments on forest land would not be allowed at any cost. He said that statement attributed to him is totally false and misleading as he has never asked anybody to cultivate forest land during his recent visit to Kanidajan area of his constituency. He said only those people who reside in the vicinity of forest areas and are in possession of forest land under “Grow More Food” scheme launched under a well thought plan by Sher-i-Kashmir sheikh Mohammad Abdullah are permitted to cultivate the land adding that nobody would be allowed to misuse this exception. He reiterated that any attempt to encroach upon the forest land under this garb would be foiled with heavy hand He has made it clear during his entire political career; he has been fighting against forest mafia. Rather said administration including police and forest departments have been directed to strictly enforce forest protection laws without any fear or favour and foil designs of the forest mafia effectively.
