Surankote encounter called off as ultras flee | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 24: The encounter, which began Monday between security forces and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants at Soni in Dera Ki Gali area of Surankote, Poonch, and in which one militant was killed late last night, was called off today. The operation was called off following inputs that the three militants, who were holed up in the area, had managed to escape, police sources said. The gunbattle started yesterday after a search party of police and army was fired upon by militants. Top LeT militant Sohail of Pakistan was killed late Monday night, while his accomplice Chota Hafeez was wounded. Sources said a total of three militants, including Hafeez, were trapped in the area and all of them broke the troops' cordon and fled. Poonch SSP Ashkoor Wani told reporters in Poonch that the militants had entered the area to disrupt panchayat elections. |
