People are crying, leaders are enjoying | ''Jammu Central University” | | Neha EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 24: The Government of India sanctioned two central universities for the state, one each for Jammu province and Kashmir division, months ago. Earlier, it had sanctioned one and the people of Jammu province had been given to understand that they would get the sanctioned central university and Kashmir would get Indian Institute of Management (IIM). Ultimately, however, the Kashmiri leaders manipulated things and made the Government of India to establish central university in Kashmir. But this is now history. Kashmir has got one and Jammu, too, has got one. The Central University of Kashmir became functional more than two years ago and the governments in the state and at the centre have doing all that they could to make it fully functional. Fair enough. The people of Jammu province have no problem with the Central University of Kashmir. In fact, they are happy. However, they are extremely unhappy with New Delhi and the state government because of their negative attitude towards their demand seeking establishment of the sanctioned central university in Jammu province for which land was reportedly earmarked last year near Samba. They are crying for justice since months. They have even organized a number of dharnas and marches, including torchlight processions, to draw the attention of the authorities to their very genuine demand, but with no result. They are demanding appointment of a local academician as vice-chancellor. But all of their efforts have failed to move the authorities. The people of Jammu are particularly unhappy with their own leaders, including those in the government and outside. Their grouse against them is that they have forgotten their constituency and that they have not done anything whatever to make the authorities establish the sanctioned university in Jammu. So much so that they have started accusing their leaders of making common cause with the anti-Dogra forces. They are saying that their leaders are simply enjoying the loaves and fishes of office and not taking up the issue of the Central University of Jammu with the concerned authorities. They have even gone to the extent of saying that their leaders have completely abandoned them. Their charge against their own representatives and leaders appears quite well-founded. For, there is nothing on the ground that could even remotely suggest that their representatives in the government or those occupying the opposition benches have even once taken up the issue of Jammu Central University in right earnest. The truth is that their leaders have not been issuing even a statement on the issue. They are perhaps busy in politicking and promoting their personal agendas. This is the people's belief. It appears the representatives of the people of Jammu province as well Jammu-based leaders would take the plunge only when things go out of hand, as it happened in 2008. They should not wait for things to assume alarming proportions. Political sagacity demands a timely intervention and nothing would be more appropriate then that they should persuade the concerned authorities to implement what has been sanctioned. Time is running out and running out very fast. Act and avert the impending confrontation. |
