Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 24: The newly-appointed officiating Leader of the BJP Legislature Party Jugal Kishore Sharma has issued disqualification notice to the 7 suspended BJP MLAs. The high command had suspended 7 out of 11 MLAs on the charge that they had flouted the party whip and voted for the NC-Congress coalition's candidates during the legislative council elections, held on April 13. However, the predecessor of Sharma, Chaman Lal Gupta, has pooh-poohed the action taken by the Leader of the BJP Legislature Party and claimed that he continues to be the leader of the party in the legislature. The situation has climaxed to the point that Gupta and his supporters and the remaining four MLAs are washing dirty linen in public and accusing each other of hatching conspiracies. They are indulging in mudslinging, thus exposing what the BJP calls "party with a difference." The suspended MLAs are saying that "they voted for the party candidate" and the remaining four are accusing other MLAs of "ditching the party candidate," who incidentally got only four votes.
The suspended MLAs have also not spared the high command. They have accused it of adopting a vindictive attitude towards them and declared that it would be a futile exercise if they appear before the high command to explain their position. In other words, the battle-lines between the rebels and the high command are drawn and both appear determined to take on each other. The manner in which the BJP MLAs have been conducting themselves since April 19 has further lowered the position of the party in the eyes of the people, with a vast majority of them dismissing the party as a party of "self-seekers and manipulators."
Interestingly, while those not suspended have asserted that the suspended MLAs indulged in malpractices and voted for the Congress and the NC candidates, some of the suspended MLAs on the condition of anonymity have accused the some of the MLAs, who have not been suspended, of entering into an "unholy alliance with the NC and the Congress." Not only this, some of them have asserted that "at least two MLAs - Leader of the BJP Legislature Party and the Party Chief Whip - were bribed by the ruling coalition even before April 13 by allotting them palatial houses -- in the high security New Rehari, Jammu." They have also asserted that "one of these two MLAs was also obliged by the Chief Minister, who exercised his discretionary powers and made him member of prestigious Club, Jammu." They disclose "these two MLAs will occupy the allotted houses in a day or two, as the renovation work is almost complete."
The story doesn't end here. The fight between the two groups has reached a stage where they are accusing each other of "befriending" the ruling coalition and saying that the "obliged ruling coalition allotted a few of the BJP MLAs huts at Cheshma Shahi in addition to the VIP suites they have been allotted in the MLA hostel." Interestingly, sources reveal that the said MLAs "belong to both the groups." As far as the people are concerned, they are saying that "there exists a close nexus between the NC, the Congress and the BJP" and that "what they BJP MLAs did and what the NC-Congress did was not a mere cross-voting; it was quid-pro-quo of sorts": Dump the people of Jammu province, you give us votes and we will take care of your self-interests. This is bad politics. Such a politics has the potential of making the people lose their faith in the system.
