A LeT commander, who was wanted in some killings and several other militant acts, was wounded in the incident, police sources said. Acting on a tip-off about the presence of LeT's Kishtwar district commander Habib Gujjar alias Abu Salman and his deputy Mohammad Ishaq Lone alias Munazil, son of Ghulam Mohammad, in Loharpura woods, a joint column of police, CRPF and army launched a combing operation in the area last night. While the troops were combing the woods, they were fired upon the militants. Fire was returned. In the ensuing exchange of fire that lasted over three hours, the jawans shot dead Ishaq while Habib managed to escape in an injured condition, the sources added. Ishaq hailed from Kwath in Chhatroo, Kishtwar. Two Chinese handgrenades, two AK magazines along with 10 rounds, one ammunition pouch, one knife, some batteries and a diary containing telephone numbers and some other personal details were recovered from him. A massive hunt was on for the escaped militant. Habib and Ishaq were involved in the killing of the mother of a SOG cop at Kishtwar last year and the slaughtering of an ex-sarpanch at Kwath some time back, besides several other incidents in and around Kishtwar. |
