Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 25: Leaders of Shiv Sena and BSP were among three people arrested by police today for allegedly murdering an ex-panch Tuesday at Chak Salarian in Ramgarh, Vijaypur.
The accused -- Deepak Gupta alias Deepu, son of Mahesh Chander of Ward No 11, Vijaypur, Surinder Lal Sharma alias Shindi, son of Babu Ram of Vijaypur, and Rajesh Kumar Choudhary alias Bindu, son of Devi Dutta of Kamore, Ramgarh -- were apprehended in the wee hours of Wednesday morning while they were trying to escape to their hideouts, Samba SSP Israr Khan said.
While Deepak was said to be Shiv Sena block president, Surinder --a tent house owner -- was BSP leader. Choudhary, originally a resident of Sangalpur Nangal Kotli Mandi in Gurdaspur, Punjab, had
been hiding at Kamore along with his family after his release on parole in a murder case at Gurdaspur. He was alleged to be the main accused. The accused were alleged to have murdered ex-panch Jaswant Singh alias Jassa (56), son of Bhag Singh, and critically wounded his son Jhankar Singh (26) at Chak Salarian late Tuesday night.
The trouble started Tuesday at about 8 pm at the tea stall of Sukhvinder Singh at Vijaypur where Choudhary and Deepak were consuming liquor.
As heated exchanges took place between Sukhvinder and the two accused under the influence of liquor, Choudhary left the teastall but soon returned with Surinder, the SSP informed. Sensing trouble, Sukhvinder called Jaswant and Jhankar in his support. Khan said after a verbal duel and exchange of blows, Choudhary threatened to kill Jhankar and Sukhvinder.
In a fit of anger, he rushed to the nearby chicken seller's shop and picked up a sharp-edged weapon from there. However, when he returned to the teastall brandishing the chicken cutter, Sukhvinder, Jaswant and Jhankar had already fled the scene, the SSP added.
As they had run towards their homes at Chak Salarian, about 3 km from Vijaypur towards Ramgarh, Choudhary and Surinder chased them in the latter's Maruti car (JMUW/2240) while Deepak followed them on a scooter.
Reaching Chak Salarian, they found Sukhvinder, Jaswant and Jhankar standing by the roadside outside Sahib Bandigi ashram. They rammed their car into them. The SSP said while Jhankar got hit by the car and fell down, the other two jumped to safety.
He said without giving them any chance to do something in their defence, Choudhary came out of the car and allegedly stabbed Jaswant into his chest, resulting in his death.
Jhankar, who tried to save his father, was hit with a cricket bat by Surinder on his nose as a result of which he became unconscious and collapsed, Khan added.
Sukhvinder, however, again saved his life by fleeing the spot and hiding himself in the nearby fields. The accused later fled the spot. When Deepak, who was approaching
Chak Salarian on a scooter, came to know about the incident, he drove to Kamore where he met both the accused.
The SSP said from Kamore, Deepak and Surinder fled in the car while Choudhary decided to spend the night in the village field and flee to Punjab in the morning.
Soon after the matter came to his notice, police parties swung into action, sealing the exit points and laying special nakas.
Khan said while Deepak and Surinder fell in police trap at Kotli Morh naka near Bari Brahmana, Choudhary was apprehended from a Kamore field at about 4 am.
A case under sections 302 and 307 of RPC was registered against the accused at the Ramgarh police station. Jhankar was undergoing treatment at the GMC hospital where his condition was stated to be stable.
