Regional discrimination even in town level data collection

Jammu, May 26: The Town Planning organisation has decided to carry out collection of town level data of urban belts in Jammu and Kashmir.
Government sources said that the Department has decided to go in for collection of town level date of 16 towns in the Kashmir valley and eight town in the Jammu region of the state. The towns in the Kashmir valley where the data collection will be carried out are Anantnag,Budgam,Baramullah,Sopore,Kulgam,Shopia,Bandipora,Ganderbal,Uri,Beerwah,Qazigund,Tral,Ac abal,Kokernag,Duksum and Bijebehara.
Among the eight towns in the Jammu region covered under the data collection are Akhnoor,Kishtwar,Rajouri,Poonch,Ramban,Samba,Udhampur,Vijaypur.
The Government circles said that this exercise was being carried out for creating a database of urban settlements under the centrally sponsored scheme, National Urban Information System.
Senior leaders of the BJP and the Panthers Party have criticised the Government for giving a raw deal to the region of Jammu.
They wanted to know why the Government has selected only eight towns in the Jammu region for collection of town level data against 16 in the Kashmir valley.
The leaders of the two parties said that a number of important towns in the Jammu region including Reasi, Bhaderwah,R.S.Pora,Bishnah,Batote,Banihal,Sunderbani, Mendhar,Ramnagar and several others have not been covered under the scheme.
The leaders demanded that the Government explain its position and inform the people whether the data collection programme under the national urban information system had any link with the development plans and projects.
Working chairman of the Panthers Party,Harsh Dev Singh,demanded a master plan for the overall development of nearly 25 towns in the Jammu region so that besides raising planned housing colonies the towns had a major facelift in the shape of upgraded sewage system,road connectivity,tiled lanes and bylanes.
