City students shine in IIT-JEE | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 26: The result of IIT-JEE for the admission to undergraduate courses in IIT, the most prestigious technical colleges of the world was released and it has surely brought some happiness for the Jammuites. Generally, securing a rank in IIT-JEE is the biggest dream of almost every science students. Everybody knows that an IIT student is usually offered the highest salary package by corporate tycoons in comparison to any other engineering colleges. It can be believed from the fact that even during recession times the students of IITs were offered a salary package of over 70 lacs per annum by some banking sectors i.e HSBC and HDFC etc. The highest rank from J&K in IIT-JEE is 433 by Pragati Classes in comparison to 3700 last year. It is an appreciable improvement but still the state is lagging behind from almost every state in India in terms of number of selections in IIT-JEE. The total number of students who appeared in IIT-JEE 2011 from J&K was around 10000 and the total number of qualified students is round about 10 i.e J&K is contributing almost 0.01% towards IITs which is again 0.01% of the total seats in IITs. Where does the problem lie? Is it the deficiency of talent in the state? Of course not our students top the selection list when it comes to Board results. Some students even secure over 95% marks in the CBSE, but the brilliant performance in the boards does not translate into something substantial in IIT-JEE. What are the reasons for this? Why is the topper of our state not able to crack IIT-JEE? Is it the quality of education or the lack of awareness. “If it is the problem, it’s a serious misconception”, says Inzar Talib who is presently a student of IIT Roorkee. Some of the students of IITs, their alumni and research scholars have been analyzing the reasons behind J&K’s poor performance in IIT-JEE. They have done substantial ground-work for the last 3 years and are now ready to present their work through a series of events which include counseling seminars, academic sessions, test etc. The first event will be a counseling seminar to be held in Jammu on 5th June. “ We are committed to bring the IIT culture in Jammu”, says Ashish Dogra student of IIT Roorkee from Jammu. Some Problems highlighted in their work are the lack of awareness towards IIT-JEE and other National level exams, no idea of which books to read and which not, how to manage time for school life and the coaching institutes, how to select, the best institute? Our Government is doing appreciable task in various educational fields but still the initiative towards encouraging students for the preparation of National level entrance exams is yet to be taken. “If government takes this initiative we will voluntarily come forward to help for this social cause and will do our best to develop a cost effective venture for our state students whose wish is nothing less than cracking IIT-JEE” says Inzaar Talib, a student of IIT Roorkee from Jammu.
