CM infiltration remarks threaten tourism, Panchayat polls: Dillawar Mir | Omar creating panic: PDP | | Early Times Report SRINAGAR, May 27: Sharply criticizing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his unsubstantiated announcement that up to 40 militants had infiltrated into the state, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it could cast dark shadow over the distressed and struggling tourism season and remaining phases of Panchayat elections. “The statement is most unfortunate both for the lack of its authenticity as well as timing and having come from the chief minister himself it sounds shocking to say the least” general secretary said at a party function here today. He was speaking while welcoming newly elected Panchs and Sarpanchs from Kupwara and a large number of political workers who joined the party today. Eight Panchs and 18 Sarpanchs from the North Kashmir district and some prominent political workers joined the party and were welcomed by senior party leaders including former minister Qazi Mohammad Afzal and Fayaz Ahmad Mir, senior vice president Kupwara. He said that Chief Minister should be guarding economic interests of the people and political process going on at the grass roots level has chosen to lead the scaremongering in defiance of repeated assertions by the army and the BSF that there had been not even an attempt at infiltration during the current year. Former Tourism minister said tourism in the state had suffered severely under the present government and most of the gains of the previous years had been frittered away on infrastructure and footfall fronts. Appealing tourism industry outside the state not to be carried away by Chief Minister’s ill informed announcement, Dillawar said the silver lining in the situation lay in the fact that Omar Abdullah had now lost most of his credibility and hoped that the tourism season would go on and the people of the state would respond to this provocation with maturity and their traditional hospitality. Welcoming the newly elected Panchs and Sarpanchs the party general secretary said that PDP had become first choice for those who had so far remained unattached or with other groups in view of its positive programmes and credibility as a sincere voice of the people. He said the deepening credibility crisis in the National Conference too was responsible for inspiring the people to look for more respectable political options. PDP general secretary also condemned repeated restrictions on political opponents of the government. Reiterating the party view that political ideas are best met with more creative ideas he said that it was undemocratic to put leaders like Syed Ali Geelani and Mirwaiz Omar Farooq under house arrest as had been done today to prevent them from joining Friday prayers.
