Excise deptt realizes record revenue of Rs 695.38 cr

SRINAGAR, MAY 27- Minister for Finance, Mr. A. R. Rather took a review meeting of the Excise Department at Jammu today, to review the performance of the various wings of the Excise Department for the year 2010-11.
It was disclosed in the meeting that during the year, the department has collected a revenue of Rs 695.38 crore, which is 99.28 crore more as compared to the revenue collected during the corresponding period of the previous yea r, thus registering a growth of Rs 16.65 percent.
The Finance Minister called upon the officers to work with greater zeal and dedication so that the revenue targets fixed for them are not only achieved but exceeded as well. This he said was essential as the tax revenue comprised the major component of the overall revenue of the State. Dwelling upon the aspect of manufacture of illicit liquor and clandestine smuggling of liquor into the State, Mr. Rather emphasized the need for enhanced enforcement activities by the department. For this purpose, he asked the officers to conduct regular raids in their area of jurisdiction.
In order to boost local agriculture production, Excise Department has granted exemption on toll on import of fertilizers to the tune of Rs 13.50 crore and Rs 1.61 crore on import of day old chicks.
The Minister was informed that 258 persons were arrested in 3235 raids and 83649 kgs of Lahan destroyed during this period with a penalty of Rs 14.92 lakh being recovered from the offenders.
The Minister appreciated the role of department in curbing the menace of drug trafficking and pursuing such cases in Courts. Minister was informed that in one of such case of seizure of Bhukki, District and Session Judge, Kathua has awarded 20 years sentence and two lakh fines to the accused person.
Among others, Mr. Sudhanshu Panday, Commissioner/Secretary, Finance Department, Mr. G. A. Peer, Excise Commissioner, Mr. R. K. Koul Special Secretary, Finance and all the Deputy Excise Commissioners and other senior officers of the department from all over the state participated in the meeting.
