Students may disturb peace in Jammu | Central University | | NEHA EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 27: Things appear assuming alarming proportions in the otherwise peaceful Jammu province. What has been slowly but surely aggravating the Jammu’s political scene is the inordinate delay in the establishment of the sanctioned Central University in Jammu. That the mood of the Jammu youth is changing and that they may disturb peace in Jammu became evident Thursday, when the Jammu University Research Scholars Association (JURSA), the premier organization of Research scholars, administered a threat that student community would not take things lying down and that it would take recourse to all conceivable means to force the authorities to start the Central University. The JURSA leadership, which has been feeling quite upset over the negative attitude of the authorities towards the people of Jammu province, was of the firm view that the main reason behind the inordinate delay in the establishment of Central University was the unwillingness of the concerned authorities to appoint a local academician as Vice-Chancellor. One cannot but endorse their view. How else should one describe the manner in which the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry had last year sought to impose controversial Amitabh Mattoo on the university as its first Vice-Chancellor overlooking the prevailing anger in Jammu? Had the people of Jammu not opposed that move or had the people not approached the President of Indian, the HRD Ministry would have made the Central University in Jammu functional last year itself, with Mattoo playing all the shots and further vitiating the political atmosphere in the state. The situation as it prevails today in Jammu as well as the Jammu-based educational institutions, particularly the University of Jammu, must make the concerned authorities take cognizance of it. Nothing would be more appropriate then that they should appoint a Jammu-based academician as the first Vice-Chancellor of the Central University. Even otherwise, the appointment of a local Vice-Chancellor is a must. For, he alone can feel the pulse of the local people and meet the educational needs of the youth. Non-local Vice-Chancellors have simply played havoc, as they never had any permanent interest in the institutions they headed, or they continue to head. It is also time for the Local leadership to intervene and persuade the authorities to do the needful before it is too late. It is the duty of the local leadership to come up to the expectation of the people of the province. For, they constitute their constituency.
