Army mounts pressure on militants in Rajouri, Poonch | | | Early Times Report RAJOURI, May 27: Increased anti-insurgency operations in Rajouri and Poonch area by army has create bafflement among the militants operating in the area as forces have eliminated all commanders. Recently two top commanders of LeT have been killed in Surankote while the remaining outfit have also come under the pressure of army. Sources said that army has intensified anti-insurgency operations especially Romeo Force has become active to eliminate all remaining militants from Rajouri Poonch districts. The force has get inputs that militants have turned confusive in the area after the Romeo Force intensified operations. Sources said that militants have also been suggested by the mentors not to take any confrontation with army. As per a press note issued by the Romeo Force, the operations by Romeo Force and Police in the past one month in Surankote area have caused huge loss to LeT. Based on specific intelligence regarding presence of a group of five militants of LeT in the forest areas of Surankote, troops of Romeo Force and JKP had launched operations on 28 April 2011. Braving bad weather conditions in difficult and rugged forested mountainous areas, the troops continued search operations and succeeded in maintaining pressure on the hiding militants. The group of militants was on the run and kept shifting places during the hours of darkness. Prolonged operations by the security forces resulted in busting of militant hideouts and recovery of large quantities of rations, bedding and other logistic stores. Due to vastness of the area with thick forests and undergrowth, physical contact with the militants could not be established. Security forces kept their cool and continued combing and search operations without a break. Finding difficult to escape from the cordon, the militants split into two groups and tried to cross a big stream in the upper reaches. While doing so, two militants got washed away. Remaining militants conveyed telephonic messages to this effect to their handlers and masters across the line of control. They identified the drowned militants as Abu Huzefa alias H2, Chief of LeT for Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu and Abu Abdullah alias Saifullulah alias Usman Bhai. Search operations by the security forces continued to trace out the bodies of dead militants as well as to locate the other three militants. On 20 May 2011, body of one militant was recovered from Suran River near Bafliaz. The body was highly decomposed and recognised as that of Abu Huzefa. Body of the second militant is yet to be recovered. Second group of three militants was reported moving in forested areas of Sauni on 23 May 2011. Troops of Romeo Force and Police immediately launched an operation. On the night of May 23, at about 8 pm, contact with these militants was established and fire fight commenced. In the encounter, one dreaded militant of LeT, Abu Umar Khan Jangwani was killed and his accomplice injured. Taking cover of dense forests and darkness, the other two militants managed to escape. One AK-47 Rifle, two rifle magazines, 60 live rounds, two hand grenades and various other items have been recovered from the body of the slain militant. Operations by the security forces to chase the fleeing militants are on. Thus, sustained operations and perseverance by troops of Romeo Force and the Police in the past one month have resulted in killing of three dreaded militants of LeT operating in the Surankote area. |
