Rather highlights contribution of legendary freedom fighter | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 28: Rich tributes were paid to Mahatma Budh Singh, the founder member of the freedom movement in the Jammu and Kashmir on his 127th birth anniversary, at a function organized by Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture and languages (JKAACL) in collaboration with the Institute of Jammu and Kashmir Affairs. Minister for Finance and Ladhakh Affairs, Mr Abdul Rahim Rather was the chief guest on the occasion while Ex- Chief Minister Mr. Mangat Ram Sharma was the guest of honour on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Rathar highlighted the contribution of the legendary leader in the state’s freedom movement against the monarchical rule which led to the establishment of democratic system in the state. He said Mahatma Budh Singh fought shoulder to shoulder with Sher-e-Kashmir sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and was jailed for raising his voice against the existing system. Rather described Mahatma as the man who rekindled new hopes in the hearts of the people for establishment of a secular democratic system in the state. He said that the legendary leader through out his life championed the cause of down trodden and suppressed sections of the society. Earlier, a documentary film highlighting various aspects of the life of Mahatma Budh Singh was screened on the occasion. Among others, Additional Secretary JKAACL Shavita Bakshi, Director Institute of Jammu and Kashmir Affairs Mr. Balraj Puri while a large number of prominent literary figures and members of civil society attended the function.
