Culture Academy remembers Mahatma Budh Singh | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 28: J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages in collaboration with Institute of Jammu and Kashmir Affairs organized a commemoration function on 127th birth anniversary of Mahatma Budh Singh, the founder of the freedom movement of J&K State.On the occasion, Minister for Finance A R Rather was the chief guest while former Deputy Chief Minister Mangat Ram Sharma, veteran journalist Balraj Puri, Ex Minister and President Jammu and Kashmir Affairs Gurmukh Singh besides Additional Secretary J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages Savita Bakshi shared the presidium . Speaking on the occasion, AR Rather termed Budh Singh as honest and sincere man who sacrificed his whole life for the cause of strengthening the unity of all religions especially Hindu and Sikhs. Rather also recalled his reformation against ‘begaar’ called slavery as ‘begaar’ was prevalent in Kashmir in those days.“We should preserve the heritage of these local heroes…. To find a man like Budh Singh in this present time is very difficult as this is a materialistic age where every one is after the money,” he said.Mangat Ram Sharma while recalling the contribution of Budh Singh said he initiated number of reforms in favour of the poor and farmers especially loan waivers from private financers called Mahajans then and ‘Khadma Chakdari,’ allotment of lands in favour of the farmers. Savita Bakshi said that the Academy will make these special days as annual features after obtaining the approval of the higher authorities so that the present generation be aware about the sacrifice of the state heroes.D S Trehan, grandson of legendry Budh Singh, presented vote of thanks beside a new edition of book on the life history of the Budh Singh was also distributed to chief guest and other guests who shared the presidium.
