Security beefed up to prevent subversives from wrecking tourist season | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 28: Kashmiri separatists, particularly the All Party Hurriyat Conference(APHC),are a worried lot over step up in the terrorist strike in Pakistan forcing Islamabad to suspend diplomatic, moral and material assistance to them. This is the general refrain among senior separatist leaders who believe that as long as Pakistan continued to be tormented and troubled by terrorist activities New Delhi may not be either forced or obliged to reopen the channels of dialogue that stand choked since 2005.A senior APHC leader,Prof. Abdul Gani Bhat, said that "We believe that following tension between Islamabad and Washington following the killing of Osama bin Laden in the strike by the US commandos at Abottabad on May 2, does not find itself under any obligation to resume dialogue with us."Bhat is of the opinion that New Delhi has developed an impression, which is not based on reality, that the separatists in the Kashmir valley were being supported by Islamabad and when this support has not been forthcoming there was no need for resuming talks with the moderates among the separatists However, separatists are not prepared to accept that they have become irrelevant. Several separatists said, "We continue to be relevant as far as the Kashmir issue was concerned”. Bhat said , “We have no objection if New Delhi prefers dialogue with Islamabad to the Hurriyat leaders we are concerned about peaceful settlement of the Kashmir issue and whether that materializes through Delhi-Islamabad talks or through triangular parleys is not as important as the result of these talks are.” In the meantime the state Government has decided to deal with a humane approach those youths who may try to destabilize peace but it will not allow the leaders of separatist groups to succeed in inciting people to resort to street protests on the scale that were witnessed during the five months of last summer. In this context more police companies were being equipped with non-lethal weapons to tackle protesters without causing any casualty. This was being done to ensure that nobody or forces would be able to wreck the tourist season.(KIP)
