Centre yet to decide on compensation for POK refugees | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 29: Though the Minister for Revenue Raman Bhalla, submitted a report to the Prime Minister, over a month ago, recommending compensation for refugees from Pakistan occupied Kashmir (POK), centre is yet to take any decision. Official sources said that Bhalla has been trying to persuade union government to announce one-time settlement of claims of Pak and POK refugees who have settled in Jammu for last several decades. Sources said that Bhalla has, in his report to Prime Minister, favoured Rs.15 lakhs as one-time settlement of claims of each refugee family. Refugee leaders said that they had been agitating against refusal of government to pay compensation for immovable assets they had left in Pakistan occupied Kashmir at the time of migration in 1947 and afterwards. However, the matter could not be decided because the government wanted refugees to submit papers confirming size of the land and the houses they owned in Pakistan occupied Kashmir at the time of partition. Refugee leaders conveyed to the Government of India that it was not possible for them to carry ownership papers of immovable assets because they had been forced by circumstances to flee from ancestral places and houses to save their lives and honour. Official sources said that Raman Bhalla has touched this issue with central government and has requested PMO that refugees should not be asked for producing ownership papers of land and houses they had in Pakistan and POK. Instead they should be given Rs.15 lakhs per family as one time settlement. Bhalla has asked officers of his department to peruse matter with union government so that refugees go their due on time.
