Phase 12 of panchayat polls ends | 74 % polling recorded in 9 blocks | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, May 29: Nine blocks, including six in Jammu region and three in Kashmir province, which went to polls today in the 12th phase of Panchayat elections, registered 74 percent polling. The elections concluded peacefully with large number of people exercised their right to franchise to elect 235 Sarpanches and 1783 Panches in 9 blocks of the state. Elaborate security arrangements were made in all the blocks to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections. The elections were held in Ghat Doda block in district Doda, Gool block in district Ramban, Mandi and Poonch blocks in Poonch district, Paddar and Nagseni blocks in Kishtwar district of Jammu region while in Kashmir Valley Baramulla block in district Baramulla, Kakapora block in Pulwama district and Achabal block in Anantnag district went to the polls. Braving the scorching heat, the enthusiastic voters queued for hours together at 1253 polling stations spread across seven districts to elect the representatives of their choice for grass root level governance. The voting began at 8 am and ended at 2 pm. At many polling stations women outnumbered the men. There were 847 candidates, including eight women, contesting for 235 posts of sarpanchs or village heads in the 12th phase. Besides this, 2,967 candidates, including 870 women, were in the fray for 1,783 village council posts. The poll percentage remained 74.68 % in Baramulla, 54.31 % in Kakapora, 71% in Achabal, 83% in Padder, 88% in Nagseni, 82.52% in Ghat Doda, 83% in Gool, 81% in Mandi and 74% in Poonch with an overall percentage of 74% in all these blocks. Page 7 with pix Danish wins cash prize chess tourney Sports & Allied News JAMMU, May 29: The title in the first edition of the Rs 3300 cash prize J&K Youth Challenge Series chess (month end Sunday) tournament, organised by All J&K Chess Association at Hotel Nek here today, went to Danish Pathania. Danish was given away a cash prize of Rs 1500. Second place went to Shivinder Chib (Rs 700) while Chetanya Sharma remained third (Rs 500). Other cash prize winners were Akriti Kotwal (Rs 300) and Vikhyat Mehra (Rs 200). A special prize of youngest participant went to six-year old, Hardik Gupta. The day-long event, which was sponsored by Ing Vysya Life Insurance Company, was meant for only those born on or after January one, 1995. And the prizes were given away to the winners by Keshav Sharma, Sales Manager, Ing Vysya. Finding a good number of enthusiastic participants, the chief guest, Keshav Sharma announced that next edition of this monthly event will also be sponsored by the Company with enhanced prize money of Rs 3500.
