Doda tense after B.Ed student jumps into Chenab following her detention by police | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, May 29: Tempers ran high in Doda after a B Ed student, who felt insulted following her alleged detention by police at Pul-Doda Sunday for “no” fault of her, committed suicide by jumping into Chenab river. In a similar incident that occured at Paddar in Kishtwar on July 13 last year, two school girls had jumped into Chenab and died.Giving details of today’s incident, police sources said B Ed student Rashida Bano, daughter of Abdul Rafiq of Bashi in Bhalessa, Bhaderwah, was strolling on the Pul-Doda road with a youth when police allegedly detained both of them. The girl’s family was also informed of her detention. While the youth was put behind the bars, the girl managed to give cops a slip, the sources added.The dejected Rashida later jumped into the nearby Chenab and was killed. Taking serious note of the incident, additional SP, Doda, Arif Rishu ordered the suspension of Pul-Doda police post incharge, SI Mumtaz Ahmad.Her slippers and a piece of body covering were recovered from the river bank. Sources said there was strong resentment in the area over the incident and trouble was brewing up. On July 13 last year, 12th class school girls — Sapna, daughter of Nand Lal and Sangeeta, daughter of Janki Nath — were detained at Atholi police station near Paddar for nearly an hour. Their fault: They had dared to spend time with their classmate Pradeep Kumar alias Ramu on the river bank. After their release, they had slipped into depression and ended their lives by jumping into the river. Their bodies were still untraced. The angry residents had stoned the then IGP and divisional commissioner after they had visited the area to pacify them. An FIR in this regard was also registered against Atholi police station SHO, Inspector Farooq Ahmad Wani.The agitated people had also attacked and damaged Atholi police station and beaten up the SHO and naib-tehsildar Bal Krishan Badyal.The district administration had also ordered a probe into the incident.
