As CM sits under a chinar, his Govt imposes 144 Comment | Wooing tourists | | Early Times report Jammu, May 30: In a bid to woo tourists, the Chief Minister reportedly spent a night under a majestic chinar somewhere in the Aru Valley. The Chief Minister conveyed a strong message. `Kashmir is safe to the extent that a Chief Minister who otherwise lives in Z+ security can spend a lonely night under a chinar at a place where six foreign tourists were abducted by militants in July 1995.’ After his night long sojourn with the chinar, the Chief Minister inaugurated a golf course at Pahalgam. Interacting with media persons, he said `golf will attract tourists to Kashmir.’ Well Chief Minister’s daring act deserves appreciation. But, a few hours after Chief Minister’s `adventure’ the government did what it should not have done atleast for the time being. Instead of supplementing Chief Minister’s action with tangible measures, the governmentchose to impose Section 144 CrPC in Srinagar city. The order shall remain in operation for two months. This contradicts the Chief Minister. It reflects the other side of the `paradise on earth’. The government believes that the situation in Kashmir was too fragile to allow five or more persons to assemble at a public place. So how does the Chief Minister expect tourists in Kashmir when his government curtails freedom of its citizens to `ensure peace’.? A few days ago Jammu Kashmir Police barred a noted human rights activist from New Delhi to enter Srinagar. He was detained at Srinagar airport and later shifted to a police guest house. Next day he was deported to New Delhi. Giving reasons for his detention and subsequent deportation, a senior police officer said: “He was deported for valid reasons. We will not allow anybody to cause breach of peace and public order.” The activist while talking to some news men said he was on a holiday and wanted to go trekking in Kashmir Mountains. A tourist was prevented from `strengthening’ state’s economy! Yes the media has to play a positive role to promote peace as well as tourism. But when the officials contradict their claims of return of normality, the scribes have no role to play.
