Minister to compensate cocoon damage in Rajouri

Rajouri, May 31
Minister for Agriculture, Mr Ghulam Hassan Mir today said that the Sericulture department was soon launching a scheme under which compensation would be provided to the Cocoon rearers of the state for the losses incurred by them in the backdrop of abnormal weather conditions.
The Minister, who is presently on 2-day tour to the border district Rajouri, was interacting with the cocoon rearers during his visit to the newly established Cocoon Auction market in Sunderbani.
The Minister said that the government was keen to promote cocoon cultivation in the potential areas of the state by providing every facility to the cocoon rearers. He said considering the threat of bad climate on the production of cocoon, the government, besides providing latest technical know how to the farmers to reduce the chances of losses in such conditions, has also decided to extend financial help to them in unavoidable circumstances.
The Minister said that the Jammu and Kashmir silk has a highly lucrative world market and efforts are being made to revive this industry in the state.
He said the Cocoon Auction Market Sunderbani which has started functioning from May 28, 2011is a major step forward in promoting the silk worm rearing in the highly potential areas of Rajouri district.
The Minister expressed satisfaction over the prevailing auction rates of Rs.462 per kg for dry cocoons at the market.
MLC, Mr. Ravinder Sharma, who also accompanied the Minister, apprised him about the loss in silkworm production in the area due to bad weather conditions. He demanded relief for the farmers who suffered more than 70% losses. He also demanded that common facility and toilets be constructed for cocoon buyers and cocoon sellers at cocoon Auction Market Sunderbani.
Later, the Minister visited Chityar Mulberry Plant Nursery in Nowshera tehsil, where he was informed that as many as 2.7 lakh mulberry plants were distributed among 808 farmers to promote cocoon cultivation in the border Tehsil.
Earlier, At Rajouri, the Minister addressed a public meeting and said that panchayat elections in the state is a landmark achievement of the government and large number of educated youth have been elected as panches and sarpanches which is a positive signal for the development of rural areas. He exhorted upon the youth to play an important role in taking the state to the new heights of development.
Farmers are the back bone of the government and steps are being taken to mitigate the suffering of this lot, he said.
Later, the Minister inspected the works on the prestigious Mughal Road Project.
The District Development Commissioner, Rajouri, Mr G A Khawaza and officers of various departments accompanied the Minister during his tour.
