Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, May 31: Calling for removal of hassles in cross-LOC trade, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said that most significant confidence building measure (CBM) in the state had faltered due to lack of follow up at government level.
Party President Mehbooba Mufti today expressed concern that the situation had so deteriorated that the traders had been forced to suspend the trade and go on strike. Urging Prime Minister to intervene and salvage trade for which dozens of people had sacrificed lives, Mehbooba said that hassles should be removed; banking and communication back up provided and proper infrastructure developed.
Addressing Panches and Sarpanches from South Kashmir’s Noorabad constituency, Mehbooba said that LOC trade had become victim of general collapse of governance in the state as the rulers were engaged only in petty games for personal power and comfort. LOC trade symbolized change in the mindsets of India and Pakistan towards Kashmir and was an acknowledgement of the need to address siege that the state had fallen into.
She said though it was only a symbolic decision in which the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the then coalition led by Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had invested a great deal but it had great potential of new possibilities of peace, development, growth and ultimate resolution of Kashmir issue. “But it is regrettable that like all other positive initiatives this crucial one also became a victim of ineptitude and indifference from a government that is scared to even talk about such issues to the centre” Mehbooba added.
Mehbooba said the environment of growth and progress that one witnessed within the state and the progress made on political and resolution fronts under the previous coalition had all been reversed. The administration was now confined to highhanded policing, perks and amenities for rulers and ribbon cutting of the projects started by previous governments in which the only contribution of this government is the delay in completion. She said there was not a single welfare scheme or significant project started by the present government though it had deliberately shelved many started by the PDP congress coalition.
Congratulating the newly elected village level leaders Mehbooba told them to work with grit and determination to make this government respond to people’s problems and difficulties. She said they had an uphill task ahead of them in the face of a government that instead of facilitating their functioning of strengthening the young institution of Panchayats would only create hurdles. Those who were present included local leaders Manzoor Ahmed Zargar, Malik Mohammad Yaseen and Abdul Razaaq.
