Seminar held to mark No Tobacco Day | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Jammu, May 31:- A seminar on ‘World No Tobacco Day’ was held in the premises of Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Sarwal here today where students of five schools including Government Higher Secondary School, Rehari, Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Reshamghar Colony, Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Nawabad Talab Tillo and Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Mubarak Mandi participated and spoke on the topic. The function was organized by Indian Red Cross Society, Jammu. On the occasion, Dr. Arshad of Government Medical College, Jammu was the chief guest, while Secretary Red Cross Society, Suresh Sharma presided over the function. Rachna Jamwal was declared Ist, while Monika Kumari and Kajal were declared 2nd and 3rd respectively. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Arshad said nine lakh people of the country die annually due to tobacco related diseases adding smoking and use of tobacco products like ‘gutkha’, causes life consuming diseases like cancer, tuberculosis, heart attack, stroke and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. He said due to the use of tobacco products, 40 percent people of the country are affected with the cancer. He appealed the younger generation to not to use tobacco products as these badly affect the health. He emphasized strict implementation of the provisions of law anti tobacco law restricting smoking in public places and their sale in 100 meter radius of educational institutions. He also called for creating massive awareness among the public about the preventive aspects of this menace followed by curative measures. He appealed the shopkeepers not to sell tobacco products to a person below the age of 18 years. Dr Arshad distributed certificates and mementos among the winners and consolation prizes to other participants.
