World no tobacco day observed, sham flags off rally | | | Early Times Report Jammu May 31: An awareness programme was organized by society for development and training on the eve of world no Tobacco Day in the premises of RIMCS Campus Kathua. In the programme, large number of students participated and took pledge not to use of Tobacco products like Cigarette, Bidi, dry tobacco, and chewing tobacco. On the occasion, District Development Manager (DDM) NABARD Aman Kalsotra was the chief guest and Lead Bank Officer of State Bank of India R.K Kalsotra and Youth leader Sanjeev Verma guest of honour. They said that tobacco kills about 60 lakhs people in the world and around 10 lakh in India. General Secretary of the Society Baryam Munde said that fatal consequences of use of tobacco have become concern of every responsible citizen. Drugs and Food Control organization, Udhampur in collaboration with District Information Department, Udhampur organized a symposium on the Topic “Ill effects of Tobacco” in the premises of Government High School, Mand here today. As many as 11 students of the host school participated in the contest. Deputy Controller Drugs and Food Control organization Lotika Khajuria was chief guest on the occasion. Rajni Devi adjudged first while Zulekha Bibi and Sapna Devi stood 2nd and 3rd respectively in the symposium contest. Arti Devi and Arun Sharma were awarded with consolation prize in the contest. In his message on the occasion of World No-Tobacco Day, Deputy Controller Drugs has highlighted need to create 100 percent smoke-free environment. This is necessary in order to protect people, especially children and women, from dreadful effects of exposure to the involuntary or passive smoking of tobacco. To observe World No Tobacco Day, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Sham Lal Sharma today flagged off a rally of school children at Nehru Park this morning. The rally took off from Nehru Park and culminated at SKICC. Hundreds of students of different schools carrying placards writ large with slogans about ill effects of smoking and other tobacco products on human health participated in the rally. A large number of doctors, members of voluntary organizations, intellectuals, prominent citizens and government officials also participated in the rally. Objective of organizing the rally was to create awareness among the general masses about the ill effects of smoking and tobacco products. Students pledged to spread the message in the society in a big way and save human lives from dreaded diseases like cancer and tuberculosis. Interacting with the media persons at the venue, Minister said that only government efforts are not sufficient to purge the society from social evils and bad habits but coordinated efforts are required at different levels through mass movement. He said school children are the best ambassadors to circulate the massage and create awareness to develop drug and smoke free society. The Minister maintained that media is playing important role in this regard giving due coverage to the noble cause. He stressed upon voluntary organizations to organize programmes and help in sensitizing society about effects of smoking on public health. Rally was organized by Drugs and Food Control Organization in collaboration with divisional administration, health department and Voluntary Health Association, Kashmir.
Meanwhile , a students rally was organized at Rajouri in which a large number of students and citizens participated. District Development Commissioner Rajouri flagged off the rally. The rally was organized by the department of Youth services and sports in collaboration with the Drug and Food Control organization under the aegis of District Level monitoring Committee for implementation of cigarette and tobacco act 2003. The rally started froam Town Hall Rajouri and culminated at Boys Higher Secondary School Rajouri. Speaking on the occasion the DDC said that this day is being observed around the world to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and its negative effects on health and social life .He asked the youth to abstain from consumption of tobacco and tobacco products and associate themselves with the crusade launched against the menace so that others might be warned of its hazardous effects. He said that collective efforts and proper information about the various ill effects of tobacco are important to encourage abstinence from all forms of tobacco. The DDC exhorted the need for generating more awareness among the students in the educational institutions so that they can carry forward the message about the negative impact of tobacco in the society. He also directed the concerned departments to organize such events and make people aware regarding this issue.
