Early Times Report
Jammu, May 31: June will commence tomorrow. The separatists have issued no calendar People seem least interested in what the authorities call summer agitation. World famous Dal Lake teems with tourists. However, the administration seems a bit worried. They do not want five or more Kashmiris to assemble anywhere in Srinagar for two months.
The authorities also restrained noted human rights activist, Gautam Navlakha from entering Srinagar. He was detained at airport and later deported. The authorities did not want him to instigate violence in the coming days.
How do they (authorities) know that Kashmir is going to witness trouble yet again this summer? Surprisingly the separatists seem least bothered about the agitation that the government expects in summer.
The preparations for foiling the `summer agitation’ started in February this year. On February 18, the Director General of Police (DGP) chaired a meeting and urged the police to take stern action against unscrupulous elements “likely to create trouble in summer”. The National Conference and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) also convened meetings on February 19. Both these parties discussed the ‘forthcoming’ summer agitation..
The Mirwaiz led Hurriyat issued a statement on February 18 and made no mention of the `proposed’ agitation. The conglomerate expressed concern over arrest of innocent persons across Kashmir. “Indiscriminate arrests and reckless use of PSA” were equaled to genocide by the conglomerate.
The Geelani Hurriyat rejected the rumors of another agitation this year as ridiculous. Geelani said the rumor was spread by unscrupulous elements.
The police arrested a number of leaders including Mushtaq-ul-Islam and Shakeel Ahmad Bakshi. Nocturnal raids and arrest of youth created a fear psychosis in the city. While people supported the preventive measures taken by the police and the civil administration but expressed serious concern over “unleashing a reign of terror” in the garb of preventing a future agitation.
Pertinent to mention the Valley has been witnessing trouble in summer for the past three years.
